GeoCat Bridge for hybrid geospatial infrastructures

Rijkswaterstaat, part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, owns many spatial datasets related to infrastructure and environment. Dutch law requires them to share those datasets on an open data portal. To achieve this, Rijkswaterstaat uses GeoCat Bridge to convert their ArcGIS maps to GeoCat Map based services, where Bridge translates the layer symbology as closely as possible.

Since all the data are accompanied by ISO 19115 compliant metadata, Bridge also publishes that metadata to their GeoCat Find based data portal and automatically links it to the map services. This greatly improves the discoverability and usability of the Rijkswaterstaat open data, and makes the publication process quick and easy.

GeoCat Bridge works best with connections to a GeoNetwork based metadata catalog for metadata publishing (OGC-CSW) and to a GeoServer or MapServer based map server for layer publishing (OGC WMS, WFS, WCS).

GeoCat Bridge can also export ISO19115/19139 Metadata, Style Layer Descriptor (OGC SLD, GeoServer), and Mapfile (MapServer, only for ArcMap™ and QGIS™) configuration files to a local drive. Some layer styles or annotations/labels may not be supported, depending on the target.
